St. John’s Welcomes a New Director of Music

Date: September 1, 2017

St. John’s, Wimbledon has appointed a new Director of Music, Robert Mingay-Smith. Robert took up his post on Friday 1st September and succeeds Michael Higgins who held the post for ten years.

Robert began his musical career at the age of 16 as Director of Music at St Peter’s Church in Brandon, Suffolk. He then went on to study at Trinity College of Music, London. He is also Director of Music at  St Mary-at-Hill Church, London, a post he has held since 2007 where he founded the successful lunchtime recital programme Square Mile Music Series which showcases talented professional musicians from all over the world in the heart of London’s financial district. Robert is also Artistic Director of new professional ensemble Seraphim, which is resident at St Mary-at-Hill.

“Music plays an integral part in the life and mission of St. John’s and we are blessed to have found such a talented successor to Michael Higgins” Rev. Bruce Rickards, Vicar said. “Robert is a remarkable musician who already has a working knowledge and love of the liturgy of the church and we believe that he will fit well into our parish life, and we very much welcome him to our community. I’d like to thank the wardens, church committee and choir for their support during the search.” He continued.

Robert will be responsible for the training, conducting and developing the established voluntary, mixed-voice chamber choir; encouraging the congregation’s musical participation including the children; section of appropriate music for regular and special services that enhance St John’s traditions and message; and engaging with the wider community through music, where appropriate. In addition he will organise and develop our established Friday lunchtime series of recitals and occasional special events, such as the Faure Requiem on Remembrance Sunday.

New members are always welcome in the choir. Rehearsals take place on Friday evenings, 6.30-7.30pm and on Sunday from 9.15am in preparation for the 10.15am Sung Eucharist. If you would like to join, or are thinking of joining but are not able to commit to every rehearsal or service, please get in touch. For more information please contact Robert.
