St John’s Events
TONIGHT – 6.30pm All Saints Evensong at St John’s, please do come along.
Volunteers wanted to help sweep up leaves: We plan to have a gardening session to sweep up the leaves around the church and church hall. This will take place on Saturday November 9th from 10.00 am to 12 noon. Everybody very welcome. Please bring your own rakes and brushes. I will provide bags to put the leaves in. The Organ Voluntary. Thank you all for not applauding after the voluntary last Sunday – we’ll continue for a few weeks and then get your views about whether it’s a nicer way to end the service or not.
7th Nov/20th Nov 2-4pm: ‘Crafts & Draughts’ Please join us if you would like to help with the craft stall contents, or have a cup of tea and a chat.
Sat 9th Nov, 2-5pm – We are opening the church up for the afternoon as part of an exhibition, “Hidden Treasures Art & Artists” by the Wimbledon Museum to show off our stained glass window by Arnold. Christ Church is also opening as part of the trail. Please let Ursula know if you can help during the afternoon.
Sun 10th Nov – 7.30pm Fauré Requiem – St John’s Singers St John’s special annual Remembrance Sunday performance of Fauré’s much-loved setting of the Requiem, accompanied by organ and string quintet.
Wed 27th Nov: Trip to the Wallace Collection. Meet 9.30am at Wimbledon Station. Jillian Hardie has offered to give us a personal tour of the collection. We need to give her an idea of numbers so if you would like to come, please can you let Jane Long know.
Sun 8th Dec 6.30pm – Save the Date – Blue Advent – for those who struggle with the changing season, and the Christmas celebrations, a quiet service of prayers and readings, reflecting on our struggles during this time of the year. Sunday 8th Dec, 6:30pm.
Sat 23rd Nov 12-4pm, St John’s Christmas Fair,. If you have anything that can be used at the fair, children’s toys, 2nd hand books, bric-a-brac, presents in mint condition that you will never use, interesting plant pots, please could you start to bring them to church and leave them at the back behind the charity banner/table – There are collection boxes waiting. A great chance to de-clutter before Christmas!

Thurs 7th Nov 7.30pm. CCJ: Talk on Christian Diversity, in the Garden Hall, St Mary’s Church. Join us for an interesting and informative talk by The Revd. Dr Nathan Eddy. He is the Deputy Director of the Council of Christians and Jews and has worked as a university chaplain, as a minister in the United Reformed Church and as a teacher of Hebrew and the Bible. The talk will examine the principal strands within Christianity. Admission is free.
Sat Nov 16th 11.30am-4.30pm, Centering Prayer: A way of praying from the stillness of the heart without words. Come to an Introductory Workshop at St. Mark’s Church, SW19 7ND. Sat 7th December Christmas with the Messiah – Explore, sing and pray the music of Handel’s Messiah. This workshop on the Christmas message will explore the music and the spirituality of the Messiah. There will be an opportunity to sing and perform excerpts and to discover the significance of the music under expert tuition. All are welcome. You do not have to be a musician or even able to read music to participate. Each workshop will conclude with a short performance (at 4.00pm) of the music studied during the day to which family members are welcome. You will be invited to contribute to the cost of the day on the day itself according to what you can afford. A contribution of £30 is suggested. Free to students and under-18s.
