St John’s Events
Sun 12th Jan 10:15 – All Welcome Service Please do come along to our new sung family service where we shall be celebrating the Baptism of Christ, and considering what this means for our own journey with God.
Sun 19th Jan 10:15am – Sung Eucharist with Holy Baptism Do join us as we hear St John’s account of the calling of Andrew and Simon, and baptise not one, but two children!
Friday 24th Jan 10am – The Conversion of St Paul As an experiment during Christmas, we had a shortened Book of Common Prayer service, with a homily, for the oft forgotten feast days that follow the Nativity – St Stephen, St John, and the Circumcision of Christ. This year we shall try and continue to mark these spiritual waypoints (red letter days!) throughout the year, so do join us for a short service on Friday 24th.
Sunday 2nd Feb – Candlemas (Feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple) Whilst many people went back to work on the 2nd of January, the Christmas season doesn’t truly end until early February, when we shall celebrate St Luke’s account of Mary and Joseph taking Jesus to the Temple, and Simeon’s response, ‘Lord now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace.’ We shall be marking this at our Sunday morning service, and also at our monthly Choral Evensong at 6pm.
Used Postage Stamps can provide valuable funds for charity. Please bring your stamps (any kind including the most common) and put them in the labelled box at the back of church. They will go to help Myaware, which funds support and research for those suffering from a rare muscle-wasting disease called Myasthenia Gravis. Thank you.
Christmas Cards – Please don’t throw away your cards, if you bring them into church, we can use them to make cards for our Christmas Fair, thanks.
TEAM PRAYERS here at St John’s each Thursday in January at 1.00pm.
Requiem for Bishop Ronald (Ronnie) Bowlby +Ronnie was the 7th Bishop of Southwark from 1980 until 1991. Under his episcopacy the Area Scheme in the diocese was introduced and there was a strong emphasis on social responsibility. As a supporter of the ordination of women it was Bishop Ronnie who ordained the first women in the diocese to the deaconate in 1987. Bishop Ronnie died just before Christmas. Bishop Christopher Chessun, the 10th Bishop of Southwark, will preside at a Requiem Eucharist in the Cathedral on Friday 10 January 2020 at 12.45pm. All are welcome at this service at which the preacher will be Bishop Peter Selby who was the Bishop of Kingston whilst Bishop Ronnie was the diocesan bishop.
Evensong at St Mary’s – Stephen will be preaching at Evensong on the 9th Feb.

Read the Bible in One Year! On Bible Sunday I encouraged you to consider reading the Bible in One Year in 2020, and now the time is truly upon us. Stephen and Rosie shall be using the Bible in One Year with commentary by Nicky Gumbel throughout the year. This can be purchased in hardback, or downloaded onto your smartphone or tablet via an app.
