St John’s Events

Stephen was invited to preach at Evensong at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge last week. His sermon can be found on the table near the side entrance of the church.

TODDLER PRAISE! – this appeared to be a success last week (and indeed two prayers from the service have been incorporated into our All Welcome Service. The next Toddler Praise will be at 9:30am Sunday 19th April – then and hopefully twice monthly from May.

COMPLINE FOR LENT – join us at 8pm each Monday for a short service of Night Prayer.

NEXT WEEK 15th March – We shall be hearing St John’s account of Jesus and the Samaritan Woman at the Well, where Peter Haddock shall be preaching for us.

22nd MARCH – is Mothering Sunday! Would some mothers’ like to offer to do the reading and intercessions? Email Stephen ASAP!

FEASTS & FESTIVALS – BCP Matins (9:30am) followed by Shortened BCP Holy Communion with homily (10am) for St Joseph, Thursday 19th Marchnote amended date – and Holy Communion for The Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Wed 25th March, 2pm, with The Rev’d Anne Cocking (Holy Trinity, Motspur Park) as our celebrant and preacher.

SAT 28TH MARCH 5pm, “MARK’S GOSPEL LIVE” The Rev’d Joseph Morris – a former actor – has performed his one-man show in hundreds of venues in the U.S., U.K. and Canada, including Southwark Cathedral in 2016. This is a superb way for anyone of all ages to prepare for Holy Week on April 5th. (Joseph is coming a long way to perform for us – please do put it in your diary and invite a friend!) Admission: suggested donation of £10. 2hrs with interval.

THE WINTER NIGHT SHELTER Annalisa Zisman is still looking for volunteers to help on Saturday evening/night/Sunday morning at St Mark’s Hall from 14th March to April 25th.  Particularly on the cooking rota, but also to fill slots helping in the hall.  If you are able to get involved please contact Annalisa on annalisa@backtobalance.co.uk <mailto:annalisa@backtobalance.co.uk>  Training available for those who haven’t helped before.

MARKING LENT – Each day of Lent Clare Hayns (Christ Church, Oxford) will be offering a short reflection on the women of the Bible https://clarehayns.wordpress.com/. A good way to mark Lent is to read and pray through the daily reflections produced by the Church of England, Reflections for Lent 2020 (Church House Publishing, £5). Alternatively you might prefer Wind, Mountain & Fire (Bloomsbury) by Mark Barrett, or for a more gentle read, You are Mine (Bible Reading Fellowship) by David Walker, Bishop of Manchester.

VISIT TO THE CLINK, Wed Mar 11th – Join Catherine & Ursula & other supporters of the Prisoners’ Education Trust at lunch in the Clink Restaurant in High Down Prison near Sutton. INSPIRED TO FOLLOW: Art & the Bible Story. At St Mark’s, 10.15-11.30am on the 5 Tuesdays in March. Each week will look at a different painting and see how it relates to the Bible passage and to us. Contact wendy.mcternan@gmail.com

MESSIAH WORKSHOP – Sat 21st March 10:30am – exploring the music and spirituality of Handel’s Messiah. There will be an opportunity to sing and perform excerpts and to discover the significance of the music under expert tuition. All are welcome. You do not have to be a musician or even able to read music to participate. The day will conclude with a short performance of the music studied during the day to which family members are welcome. £30. Mount Street Jesuit Centre, London W1K 3AH.

SEVEN LAST WORDS FROM THE CROSS – PALM SUNDAY 5TH APRIL   As part of the church’s Holy Week worship, the choir (as well as choristers) will be giving the premiere of an exciting collection of pieces based on Christ’s seven utterances from the Cross, and including verses of the PsalThey will be interspersed with readings and congregational hymns, creating a musically varied and spiritually contemplative occasion. The service will start at 6.30pm.
