Lament and the Covid Crisis
The more I ponder it, the more I think that Tom Wright’s little booklet on God and the Pandemic published a few months ago, is really worth reading. Wright reminds us that lament – the cry of the heart to God – is a long standing practice, and an entirely reasonable response for a Christian. It’s only 90 pages long, and I really do commend it. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0281085110/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_homsFbDYT903Q
This September, +Rowan retires as Master of Magdalen College, Cambridge, and alongside the retirement of Tom Wright last year, this perhaps marks the end of an age in the intellectual life of the CoE. However, Rowan’s put together two little pieces recently which I thought might be of interest, one on COVID (here) the other more generally on theology in the life of the Christian believer (here).
I commend both articles, but as someone on social media put it, if the CoE had more of Rowan’s thoughtful, prayerful tone on the coming of the pandemic, instead of mainly issuing directives, things might have been better received.
In Time of Plague or Sickness – Sat 5th Sept, 2pm (Online)
The Prayer Book Society (of which, for my manifold sins, I am a trustee) is holding a free, online conference on how we might think about the coming of COVID. Whilst this year I’ve not had a hand in the line-up of speakers, I think it looks excellent, and commend it to you:
Want to go further with God? One way of growing in your relationship with God is by having a spiritual director. The idea is that you meet with this person (who is like a coach or a mentor in the Christian life) every 4-6 weeks, to reflect on what God might be saying and doing in your life. Rev’d Clive is about to enter his third year in training to become a spiritual director, and is looking for people to offer spiritual direction to from the autumn till next June. Normally there is a fee for this ministry, but, since he is in training, the sessions will all be gratis. If you’re interested (or know someone who might be!) do let him know.
