Mid-Week Update from St Johns
Date: June 17, 2020
Dear all –
Well, quite an exciting week – Stephen, Rosie and I have been into St John’s, moving anything that is detachable to keep you safe for when we open for an hour for private prayer on Sunday (10-11am, for those of you with busy diaries). Stephen will send a separate email about this
because, as you can imagine, there’s a host of H&S requirements that we have to comply with, and it’s probably easier if that is just in one email, so you know what do do before you turn up – just to re-assure, it’s not at all complicated to follow, but we do want to make sure we keep the church safe for everyone.
As you can imagine, without us there, the church had become rather dusty – and the spiders had definitely started to make a few cheeky take-over webs, so Rachel has already organised the cleaners to give the place the once-over, and it will be lovely to be back on Sunday.
Tonight we have the PCC meeting where our lighting project should get the sign off, so we can send it off the the diocese for approval. I’d like to thank Catherine, Ken and Ursula (and Ryan at CES, our lighting designer) for all the work they have done in pulling together the required
documentation, and to Richard and John for sitting on the lighting committee and giving their input and support. Feedback on these documents from our committee has been very positive, and we’ve also already heard back from the Conservation officer at Merton (one of the bodies we need to consult because it’s a listed building) who has said, “The installation of the proposed new lighting will be a great enhancement for the Church. I give you my support for the project” – which is really a glowing endorsement, as they don’t tend to be so positive.
Graham has sent me some photos of their Day Lilies – these were given to them by their cousins a couple of years ago, are now established and have just started flowering this year. Apparently the flowers only last a day, so lucky he took a few photos!

*Bellringing – a great video*
Can I apologise to Prudie, who sent this a couple of weeks ago, and I meant to put it in my midweek update, as I think it’s great – Prudie, I’m so sorry that I forgot – but I hope you can all enjoy this now!
