Mozart produced a masterpiece with his Quintet for Piano and Winds in E flat major, K 452, and considered it ‘the finest work I have written to date’.
To show what stuff he was made of, the young Beethoven took up the challenge with his Op.16, a work for the same instruments, with the same structure and in the same key.
Which one is best? We are lucky – both are masterworks, played here by an outstanding pianist with the pre-eminent group of wind players.
Mozart Quintet for Piano and Winds in E flat major, K 452
Beethoven Quintet for Piano and Winds in E flat major, Op.16
And two masterpieces of the wind quintet repertoire by Hindemith and Carl Nielsen
